SerNativo Ecological Reserve

The SerNativo Ecological Reserve created by biologist Dra. Cecília Gonçalves de Medeiros in the community of Acari, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, is a well-known site located on the shores of the reservoir Gargalheiras. The reserve is located on the family ranch (Sitio José Gonçalves) of Dra. Celcilia, who is forced to sell because she is retiring and can no longer manage the project. Included with the ranch is a project to manage a new Cento Turistico located in the village of Gargalheiras, at the dam itself, approximately 3.5 km from the town of Acari. The reserve is already well-known by Brazilian enthusiasts. The objective of Andetur Brasil is to preserve the project started by Dra. Cecilia.

Andetur´s Brazilian Travel Club, since it was created, has had a special interest in the promotion of soft-adventure, cultural and eco-tourism. The SerNativo project offers the potential to exploit all of this ... at the same time continuing Dra. Celilia's original plan of preserving her beloved ´caatinga' , the natural vegetation of the sertao of the northeast.

The proposal is to purchase the ranch and to operate it as a Hotel-Fazenda catering to:

The project will require investment in the camping facilities, additional chales to accomodate tourists, the building of at least two ecological tour boats and water-taxis to transverse the lake, communication facilities, etc. The ranch has access to fresh water and electricity.

Adjoining the property is access to some 35 registered archeological sites with Indian paintings dating back some 4,000 + years.

Acari, Rio Grande do Norte

Considered the cleanest city in Brazil, and the muse of Seridó Region of northeast Brazil, Acari is one of the oldest cities in Rio Grande do Norte. Its natural beauties include mountain ridges and a great fresh water reservoir, called Gargalheiras Dam. Gargalheiras Dam is the main sightseeing assets in Acari. Located 4 km away from the town of Acari, on the Acauã River, it is a beautiful spectacle in the winter, when the river gets full and flows over the high wall of the Reservoir, forming a waterfall.

Gargalheiras Dam

The city of Acari has several other tourist attractions. For those who are looking for some adventure, there is nothing better than climbing Bico da Arara Hill, whose caverns shelter millions of swallows that migrate from Africa from April to October. Besides that, the tourists can still find in Acari excellent handicrafts and exquisite typical or regional culinary

.

Nationally and internationally famous for the beauty of its beaches and the hospitality of the people, the State of Rio Grande do Norte invites visitors to also know better the interior of the state, which hides in the middle of the Caatinga vegetation many paleotological sites, ancient paintings and pictures, left by the Indians who lived in the area thousands of years ago.  These treasures will be found in the middle of wild scenery, surrounded by beautiful formations of rocks sculpted by erosion of thousands of years, some of them which had been dated among the oldest in the world. There are over 35 known sites in the hills surrounding the ranch.

The SerNativo Ecological Reserve (Ranch) is located on the south shore of the Gargalheiras reservoir. Access from Acari is by boat or canoe ... to reach the ranch by road requires a 30 km trip around the mountains and river below the dam over very rough country roads.

Of special interest are the photos of indian paintings - over 4,000 year old - of some 35 different archeological sites bordering the preserve.
