The Pantanal - Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul - Brazil The Pantanal of Brazil is the World's largest wetland, covering 230.000Km2 along the upper reaches of the Paraguai River. Once an inland sea, much of the Pantanal still floods during the rainy season.

The Pantanal is home to more than 600 species of birds ( a birdwatchers paradise ), 300species of fish and a wealth of terrestrial wildlife that includes alligators, deer, capybaras, monkeys and anteaters. The Pantanal keeps it's wildlife willinly on display, the terrain is open expansive grasslands, broken up by a network of interweaving rivers, lakes and forest areas. The perfect setting for animal watching and relaxing, which is very easy to do in this idyllic setting.

There is no 'best time' to visit the Pantanal, it is spectacular all year round.
Between June and late September - the dry season - the weather is cooler, there is little rain and few mosquitoes. Also you will find that the animal and birds are clustered around the available water and gives rise to some spectacular wildlife viewing.

November to March is the rainy/wet season when vast areas of the Pantanal can become flooded. This can make travel difficult but not impossible, mosquitoes are more abundant, and temperatures rising, all peaking in January and February. But do not be put off, there is still plenty of wildlife to be seen clustered on the remaining dry islands and flowering trees blossom at this time.
