350
km northeast of Natal is Lajedo de Soledade, a Limestone
outcrop with excellent examples of the erosive action
of water forming caves and crevices which prehistoric
man has used as a canvas for his artistic expression.
It has taken the form of paintings and engravings, some
of the best examples of prehistoric carvings in the world,
dating back between 3,000 and 10,000 years. Bewarned,
this place is seriously hot-hats, boots and sunblock 50.
After
lunch its off to the mountains. Martins with its marvellous
views coolclimate and lush vegetation is the ideal spot
for relaxing by the pool, in the shade of a Mango tree,
looking out over the blue tinged vales of Northeastern
Brasil laid out beneath you. The peace and tranquillity
here is ideal for a well-deserved night of philosophical
dreaming.
A
good breakfast and then maybe a little lunch and we are
off to visit the Dinosaurs, well their fossilised footprints
to be more exact. Two hours drive from Martins is Sousa,
in the Sertao of Paraiba, the best place in the world
to see where Dinosaurs once walked, good name for a film.
They include prints of Iguanodonte, 40 cms across, Stegosauros,
Allosauros and many others as yet not definitely identified.
They were laid down some 110 to 120 million years ago
in the basin of the Rio do Piexe as it was drying out,
and cover an area of 700 km.
Enough
of dinosaurs, a good sleep and back to the coast, JP calls.
