Suggested Equipment
SPINNING OR BAITCASTING TACKLE

Take medium to medium-heavy largemouth bass tackle with long-handled 6 - 6 1/2 foot rods and strong reels of at least 100 yards capacity with high-speed retrieve ratios. Bring a maximum of two rods and reels, due to strict weight restrictions on the charter flights. Don't worry about not having enough equipment in case of breakage or failure--the yacht and camps all carry a good of first-rate backup equipment. We suggest you use a firm action tip on your rod to allow for accurate casting of heavy lures. For lines, we suggest “T&C Tufline” or "Power Pro" in 50-80 lb. or similar. If you prefer monofilament, we suggest "Big Game Trilene" 30-40 lb. While fishing for peacocks there is no need for steel leaders.

Suggested reels used by experienced peacock anglers are Shimano Chronarch or Curados, Ambassador 5600C4, Eon E6600 by Abu Garcia, Quantum IR410Cx, Diawa Procaster PT33SH,

My personal favorite bait casting rod is an Ocean Master 6.5' 3 pc. Travel Series medium-heavy action with the Ambasodor Reel; and my favorite spinning rod is a Fenwick 7' two-piece travel rod with a Shimano 4000FG Stradic reel.

TOP WATER
SPINNING OR BAITCASTING LURES

Topwater—a mixture of around 12 total lures Luhr-Jensen “Ripper” or “Woodchopper” big game black/orange, fire tiger, clown L/J “Ripper” or “Woodchopper” 1/2 oz. black/orange, fire tiger, sunshine perch L/J “Peacock Bass Special” 3/4 oz. red/white, orange/black

Diving Minnows—a mixture of around 12 total lures Bomber Long A, Rebel Jumpin’ Minnow, Mag Rattle Trap, Original Rapala, Cordell Redfin, etc. Six to seven inches long in fish colors, such as combinations of silver, chrome, blue, black, orange and green.

Peacock bass flies with 1/2 oz. egg or plastic worm weights (Carolina rig) are good subsurface producers.

FLY FISHING TACKLE

Note that presently I am not a fly-fishing specialist ... but our Araca camp has conditions that reportedly are of special interest to devoted fly-fishermen. I intend to learn this year.

According to the specialists, the aggressive jungle species are well suited to fly fishing. There are still many fly fishing world records to be set. A 9 or 10 weight fly rod is recommended. Reels should have a smooth drag, hold at least 150 yards of backing, and be spooled with weight forward bass taper floating and fast sinking tip lines. They suggest “Orvis Depth Charge”—250 to 300 grain or “Teeny” 300 grain. They also suggest 40-50 lb. monofilament for leader/tippet material.
