Roteiro - Rio Grande do Norte

Apodi - Açu - Acari

Route (Roteiro) suggested by the Brazilian Clube of Cicloturismo Rodrigo Telles 2001

For Andetur, this trip is based from our office in Acari, Rio Grande do Norte (14), but starts in Apodi or Lagedo da Soledade (12). It is suggested that it might be worthwhile to spend the good part of a day in the Lagedo. The village of Soledade is quite small, but it is less than 10 km from Apodi. It is required that you have a local guide to visit the Lagedo. These guides are volunteers from the village, and you pay them a tip (or gratifica) what you feel is just.

From Apodi to São Rafael, we have several alternatives of towns to visit ... Caraúba 39 km from Apodi (posible overnight) ... Campo Grande 31 km from Caraúba ... Triunfo 18 km from Campo Grande....

Depending on the time available, from Triunfo, we can go North to Açu thru the Vale da Açu, or we can go southeast thru Jucurutu, then turning north to our actual destination of São Rafael.

Campo Grande, Rio Grande do Norte

In São Rafael we find the Fazenda Lagea Formosa. The Fazenda does not have the cstructure to receive tourists. Entrance is very cheap (R$ 2.00). It will be necessary to overnight in São Rafael.

On the way from São Rafael to Acari, we pass the town of Florānia, an interesting little city (a little more humid than the caatinga we have been passing). South of Florānia, a suggested side trip on dirt roads takes us to Cruzeta before we travel the last 18.5 km to Acari.

Rodrigo Telles, of the Cicloturismo Clube, who did this trip in 2001, suggests that Acari is a local where you can easily spend 4 - 5 days. I agree, I plan on retiring to Acari. The Indian paintings in the hills and caverns near the Reserva SerNativo are completely different. There are 35 known archeological sites documented in the area. Tours can be arranged, with guides, by bicycle, horsebank or jeep (land-rover).
